About Me

Welcome to my page! I started teaching 8th grade ELA here at Fleming in 2001, and have now been the teacher librarian since 2022. I absolutely love our school, our students, and my career.

My College Story:

Going to college was the most amazing, lucky, and life-building decision I ever made.

I was born, raised, and educated in Los Angeles. My home schools were Audubon Jr. High and Dorsey High, but my mom had my brothers and I bused to Emerson Jr. High and University High School in West Los Angeles (she believed it would increase our chances of going to UCLA for college).  One of my older brothers did not graduate from high school, but later got his GED and went to a tech school. My other older brother only applied to UCLA. After he was not accepted, he went to the army straight out of high school. I idolized my 2 older brothers. Since we did not live in a safe area, both of my parents worked, and the internet and video games had not yet been invented, I spent most of my time reading everything my older brother was reading. Since he is 5 years older, I was reading much higher than my reading level. I think this is why I became a strong reader that could do well enough on the SAT to even consider college.

To be perfectly honest, I was not a hardworking student and I had no idea what career I wanted to pursue. Luckily, during my junior year I was forced to take  a class that made us complete a college application. My studious friends were shocked when my SAT scores came back just as high as theirs (because I'm a good reader!) I didn't know what else to do after high school, so I applied to 3 colleges. Learning from my brother's mistake, I knew UCLA was out of my league! Amazingly, I was accepted into all three, and I chose to go to UC Irvine.

Living in Irvine, making lifelong friends, and getting my degree opened up doors that I didn't even realize existed. I am extremely grateful that my high school made me complete an application!

Hobbies and Interests:
When I'm not teaching or reading, I enjoy learning new things. I am currently teaching myself to play the piano,  dance, crochet, and sing BTS songs in Korean :)  Any time there is snow, my husband and I will be skiing at our local mountains. We also enjoy traveling, running, and spending time with our adult daughter, son, and doggo!
